Activity 1. You’re about to watch an extract from a famous American TV show – “The Big Bang theory”. Read the information and answer the questions:
1. Who are the main characters of the show?
2. What is their problem?
3. What does Sheldon want to get in this episode?
4. How is he going to get it?

The Big Bang Theory The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom about two university geniuses, one experimental physicist, Leonard Hofstadter, and one theoretical physicist, Sheldon Cooper. All of them are geeks and intellectuals, they understand how the universe works, but none of that helps them interact with people and make friends. In this episode, Sheldon wants access to university computer, which his adversary Kripke controls. So Sheldon decides to become friends with him and even invents an algorithm for making friends.

Activity 2. Study the Sheldon’s friendship algorithm and answer the questions:
1. What colour are the questions that you should ask to a person you are talking to?
2. What colour are the questions that you should ask yourself?
3. What two colours are the instructions what you should follow?

Activity 3. What do you think of this algorithm? Is it going to work?

Activity 4. Watch the video. What problem does Sheldon have with the algorithm? How does Howard change the algorithm? Where does Sheldon finally decide to go with Kripke?

[spoiler title=’KEY’ style=’default’ collapse_link=’true’]Sheldon doesn’t like any of the activities suggested by Kripke, so he gets stuck at one question. Howard changes the algorithm so that there are limited repetition of the questions and after 6 times he has to choose one activity. Sheldon and Kripke decide on going rock climbing [/spoiler]

Activity 5. Watch the video again. Why do these people say the following phrases?
Howard: Have you thought about putting him in a crate while you’re out of the apartment?
Sheldon: Tell me another interest of yours.
Leonard: Uh-oh, he’s stuck in an infinite loop.
Sheldon: Howard, that’s brilliant! I’m surprised you saw that.
Howard: Gee. Why can’t Sheldon make friends?

Activity 6. Discuss the questions:
1. What do you think of Sheldon’s friendship algorithm? Can it help him to make friends?
2. What opinion do people have of Sheldon?
3. Why is it difficult for him to make friends?
4. Could you be friends with a person like Sheldon?
5. What advice would you give to Sheldon to help him make friends?
